That's where the parents, the high school counselors and other persons of influence need to stress to these kids the facts. The facts are that only a small percentage of college athletes make it to the pros and the big bucks. And one broken bone can end that career totally. It is important to have an education to fall back on. If you can use your athletic skills to fund your education, go for it, but you can't put the athletics on a higher pedistal that the academics.

All those kids dreaming of being a great athlete have themselves psyched up to think that if they only believe in the dream hard enough, they will make it. Athletes are held in high regard and no one pushes them around. Most computer whizzes pale in comparison popularity-wise. All this hero-like status that we give to star players is largely to blame. When was the last time you saw any body cheering on Bill Gates? Frowner

Really? I am skeptical.... I went to a state university. The proceeds from the campus bookstore supported athletics.... and since my major required weekly purchases from the bookstore, I spent alot of money on athletics. Don't know that they (athletics) did diddly squat for me. I guess that the alumni fanatics donate more because of athletics, but that money GOES to athletics.
I am apparently in the minority, but athletics are an extra curricular activity when it comes to educational institutions and they SHOULD be treated that way. Athletes get special tutoring (to make up for the classes they miss or general learning shortcomings) and special privileges that the general university population does not have access too.
As I understand it, U of L athletes do not rank well when it comes to graduating, but, they sure can play ball!


Schools garner quite a bit of revenue from the sports teams. And, more comes from their conferences and even more if they make tournaments and bowls.

Governor Fletcher appoint his arena task force today naming many influential people but NOT Councilman Dan Johnson who favors the downtown location only. Maybe he IS somewhere between lost and found. Big Grin
