Did you say BE FAIR??? Roll Eyes What's that?

What do you mean by this comment, M.J.? Are you addressing this at the Admin or me? You do realize that jchris has been spewing the insults rather liberally lately without any provocation.

Neither TomCat... My parents always told me LIFE is not fair so don't expect too much of it. If life was fair we wouldn't have wars, schools needing money, things would still be 25 cents for a pop and candy bar together. I didn't mean it towards anyone. I figured if I said didn't your parents ever teach you life isn't fair he would have taken it as an attack on him so I tried to avoid that. No harm intended here.

Athletics helps to support the rest of the school

Really? I am skeptical.... I went to a state university. The proceeds from the campus bookstore supported athletics.... and since my major required weekly purchases from the bookstore, I spent alot of money on athletics. Don't know that they (athletics) did diddly squat for me. I guess that the alumni fanatics donate more because of athletics, but that money GOES to athletics.
I am apparently in the minority, but athletics are an extra curricular activity when it comes to educational institutions and they SHOULD be treated that way. Athletes get special tutoring (to make up for the classes they miss or general learning shortcomings) and special privileges that the general university population does not have access too.
As I understand it, U of L athletes do not rank well when it comes to graduating, but, they sure can play ball!

I agree that the spotlight should be turned on the academics of any school program, whether it be high school or college. With that being said I will say again how can we tell these gifted athletes that school is much more important that the 50 million dollar contract being waved in front of their faces.

It is not all about the contracts either, look at cheerleaders. They go to college on scholarships and when they make it to "big time" they are making, what like 25 smackeroos a game!!

Sports are a major part of our society, we teach our children to be "good" sports when they win, we criticize those that are "bad" sports when they lose. Those that are good at sports are the popular ones or the heors and those that are good academically are nerds or geeks. So look through the eyes of a 16 years old self conscious teenage boy and see who you would rather be?
I myself hope my child is the geek but if he has the choice I am sure he would pick the hero.
