Well, then you being a Chicago native, you know that if it gets below a certain temperature, the salt will not melt and it will simply sit on top of the snow and eventually freeze over, making ICE instead. It seems to me that you have some paranoia that the government is out to get you..I got news for you...THEY AREN'T.

salt melts the snow. Salt does not melt. IOt pulls the moisture out of the snow making it breakdown.

ok..so the salt trucks are out on the roads for your safety as soon as they have word that there is going to be snow..The snow trucks are out there..and it doesn't snow..What do ignorant people do? COMPLAIN. The salt trucks have no awareness that the snow is coming because the meterologists say that the snow is going directly south of us, and then we get snow... the Transportation Department of Highways(my DAD) sends out the trucks as fast as humanly possible to get workers in at such short notice and the roads are clear by noon and what do ignorant people do? COMPLAIN Face it. You people will never be satisfied with what the government and transportation department of highways is trying to do for you. Mad Mad

(K)You people, you people, you people,... one poster has a negative thing to say and you use "you people."Roll Eyes
My 13 year old knew snow was coming, what channel was you watching?
It's not the meterologist who is at fault either if there is incorrect reports.
(SG)Weather is going to do what it will. No man or woman can be 100 percent correct all year long. Pay attention to the sky once in awhile and how it feels outside, you just might beat(drive safely though aka leave early) that rain,or snow.
(K)Ignorant people? Umm we are not the ones allowing our kid on myspace. Wink

Scientifically, chemically salt lowers the freezing point of water. I don't think it actually melts ice. That would require some thermal reaction. I don't know what they use on the roads, but you typically see Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) instead of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) in bagged ice "melts" as it has a lower freezing point.

As a native Chicagoan, temperature is a lousy excuse for not pre-treating the roads. One of the government's duties is to keep the roads that they are responsible for safe and clean. Waiting for the sun to come out and do the work for them is not acceptable.
American Woman - 1) I had to go out yesterday and 2) I left 20 minutes earlier than I needed to. I still ended up doing +$1200 worth of damage to my car because they could not clear the roads.

FrownerI am more concerned about Amber Alerts,Tornado warnings/watches,severe flooding so I do not go down a highly flooded road, someone breaking into my home, stealing my car, trying to snag one of my children,a drunk driver ramming into my car,a drive by,some doper trying to sell my child drugs, where the murders are taking place so I can stay the heck away from there, where those Al Queada monsters are,how many bus wrecks there are, what schools protect our children, scams going around, new treatments for illnesses,.............. Now does your complaint seem small?
Frowner I understand where you are coming from, but just leave a little earlier(like an hour) and take your time. It's not wonderful to have to leave an hour earlier, but it is small compared to what we all should be worried about you see? My husband was out,he had to go to work,he called(he uses a headset) me and said do not go anywhere, because it's nasty out and I slid a couple of times on the ramp trying to give it gas to get up and around the ramp. He then said I am glad I left an hour early, because everyone on the Watterson is driving from 10-20 and as you know it's 55(to some people 75 Mad). He made it on time with a few minutes to spare, but he didn't wreck due to leaving earlier and taking his time. Wink How did you wreck? Be honest how fast was you going? Where were you when it happened?
