Louisville Businessmen Pay For New Study On Proposed Arena Site

I wish David Jones and John Schnatter would wake up and realize just how unlikely it already is that Louisville will get any arena at all. Governor Fletcher does seem to be solidly behind the project but he is very much wounded politically. This late debate reminds me of the many, many years we spent debating where to locate the bridge until someone suddenly got the bright idea to build two.

I'm not sold on the idea of building an arena in the first place. Even under the best scenario, the arena will be dark more than half of the time. Elsewhere in the U.S., arenas and stadiums have proven to be dismal failures as economic catalysts. Having said this, Freedom Hall is getting pitifully old and we could wipe out the horribly-blighted LG&E sub-station at Second and Main Street. If we are to have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting this arena, let's stop fighting and get behind one site. Let's not debate this thing to death. There are much better causes Mr. Jones and Mr. Schnatter could have spent their $220,000 on. Mad

I have a question, Why do we need a new arena anyway? To waste money? Plus..I thought Gov[Mother]Fletcher claimed that we don't have enough money...If we can build an arena for a hundreds of thousands of dollars, why can't we give government employees a higher raise, and give teachers the raise theydeserve?

Just a question...

Rick Pitino: "Take the money and give it to the poor. It'll be money better spent. Leave this thing alone. It's not gonna happen."

Right on, Rick! Smiler

This is truly such a hot button issue for me. I mean this is ridiculous. They want to put money towards an arena when we have jobless people and people living off welfare out there. Is this truly going to be worth the hassle even though it will provide more jobs. Personally I feel they should get someone else in the governor's seat. I mean to be against raising mininum wage but for this... I don't stay too much into politics but day by day I am getting more into it and a person cannot live off mininum wage! I think we, the people, should get to choose where our tax money goes... not greedy men like Fletcher. I have to say that honestly I have not had the best luck with politics, laws and certain things being on my side and no I am not talking about crime, yet I am talking about crime committed upon me where the government didn't help me out, but before when they wanted my money it wasn't a problem. This world is so screwed up and for them to want this rather than actually HELP people is disgusting and sickening!
Now finally I found others like me! What a relief!!
Thanks

It's a big mistake to think that not building the arena will some how leave more money for schools or the homeless. We are very lucky that Governor Fletcher is backing the funding of Louisville arena. If approved, the state will issue $75 million in state bonds to fund a large part of the project. If the arena project is not approved, bonds will not be issued.

There is no rational reason to think that not building the arena is going to suddenly result in more soup kitchens or after-hours programs being added to local schools. There are always other things we can spend state money on. To say that we shouldn't pursue an economic development project because all other issues are not fully funded is absolutely ludicrous.
