I had to go read the April 9th Hot Button text to see what Don Ramsier was addressing. Here's a clip from the editorial:
quote:
Next Saturday we will again see and hear the jets and strategic bombers of the Thunder Day Air Show. As I stand on the Great Lawn, I will be thinking of how these weapons are intended to defend our country and free institutions. But, I will be thinking also of unintended consequences.
The machines are designed for the sole purpose of killing human beings by the millions. That is all they do. They do not educate. They do not bring health and well being. They do not spread freedom and democracy. They do not win hearts and minds. They can only kill and make us killers.
For starters, he correctly identifies the intended use of the machinery: to defend the country. After that tho, he mentions the "unintended consequences".
What the heck? The consequences of defending the country (or global peace) are hardly "unintended". But in understanding the mission of
defending peace, one has to comprehend there is an aggressor who has brought this burden upon himself.
I think he's being a bit melodramatic in his delivery, but I do support his right to express his opinion. He can do so
because of those very machines he hates, yet still goes to watch.
Hmmm... sounds like someone I know.
