Thanks Abuela. With a son in the sandbox and another getting ready to leave for basic, I am even more aware than I used to be. Even though I have always been a Patriotic American.
This past 4th holiday (Sunday-Tuesday) I had a booth set up (So. IN Blue Star Moms) at the Pekin 4th of July Festival (Pekin, IN) and was selling chances on blankets (a blanket for each branch of the military and a support our troops blanket) and cold bottles of water (each $1) to raise money to send care packages to our troops deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan. I met a lot of great people who brought tears to my eyes when they talked about their loved ones serving, or Vets when they talked about things they went through when they served. I talked to a widow from WWII whose husband dropped his last bomb and was on his way home to see his bride when he was shot down and killed. She never remarried and raised their 5 children alone. Her 4 sons served proudly, her daughter served and she filled shells with gun powder. That was during the time when people knew what it meant that "FREEDOM ISN'T FREE." Then I saw people and got remarks from people who just view the holiday as a day off from work, a chance to see fireworks or to drink. Some wouldn't even speak when I asked if they would like to buy a chance on a blanket to help support our troops. They just looked at me like I was stupid. I felt like asking them if they would like to bet a $1 that they could speak at least one word of English. If they could, then they could thank a soldier for that.
Well, I could ramble about this, so I'll stop for now. THIS IS TO EVERYONE... WHATEVER YOUR VIEWS ON THE WAR...
NO ONE DISLIKES WAR MORE THAN THE MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES. BUT, WE PROUDLY STAND BY OUR CHILDREN IN THEIR DECISION TO "SERV" THIS WONDERFUL COUNTRY. WE ARE NEITHER FOR OR AGAINS THE WAR; WE ARE
FOR OUR CHILDREN.
IT IS ALL ABOUT SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS!
ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM EVERYONE!

Congratulations, Blue Star Mom, on your efforts to support our deployed troops. There are several organizations that provide avenues for letting them know how much we appreciate their sacrifices on our behalf. The one I utilize is [URL=www.anysoldier.com]. OK...I'm a true junkie cause reading the postings of these soldiers gives me a broader view of what they are accomplishing every day and understanding of their pride in successful missions. These are the successes that are unreported and overshadowed by the negative reports we are bombarded with daily.
My own son has been deployed to the middle east twice. I am very proud of his service to secure our freedom and security. Therefore, your posted sentiments are also dear to my heart.
As we celebrate our nations independence, we are able to celebrate the freedom we enjoy because of our brave soldiers of 230 years!!
Happy 4th of July, Everyone!!
