I live in a blackout area as well.
In fact much of the rural areas in northern Shelby county do not get insight OR DSL.
Wireless is an option you may be able to get but their antennas work line of sight so you have to have an unobstructed path from your receiver to their antennas.
There are more satellite services available but no matter what they claim on their websites, they always charge at least $100 per month, can’t provide over 3m an will also charge a lot for equipment.

Our best bet for cable high speed is to get Charter Media down here.
Insight is a partner with charter but insight does not have the same services or resources that Charter media does.
Current ownership laws would not allow charter to move down here so it is more an issue of Insight waking up and merging fully with charter.
Which will happen eventually anyway as Insight is a very half assed provider by comparison.
It is only a matter of time.

What is the most likely is that AT&T will install the 10 million worth of new fiber optic lines needed to open these more rural areas to DSL.
It simply takes more letter writing and emails.
I send them at least five a week.
Right now there is no construction schedule for the upgrades but I’ve been promised to be notified when it is scheduled.
Which of course is not good enough for me so I continue to write and bother the hell out of their administration until I get my friggin DSL.

Because I’m not going to buy insights crap or burn my money for a crappy satellite system that won’t even work during a storm.

Keep writing those letters if you wish. There's one reason and only one reason that you don't have broadband: costs. For DSL, you have to be within a certain distance of the central office. That's works in the city but it doesn't work in rural areas. For cable systems the costs are also too high to interest any profit-seeking company to pay for the infrastructure. Your best hope is probably something called Broadband Over Powerlines. Tests are under way but signups for service are likely several years away. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Frowner

Power line two way is only experimental and the infrastructure requires an entire network of new equipment.
Also, we would be running into a rather nasty legal battle between the FCC, media providers and national power authorities over fees and charges.
Cable companies and power providers have been at odes for decades and that kind of communication system would be the perfect reason for them to start another long and costly battle that would end up costing us more then anything.
We also have independant home power systems comming into the market soon.
With no more power networks, the system would be useless.
Adding Fiber optic lines is far less costly and exists NOW.
Backbones (the central nodes required to extend service)are only $10,000.00 a peice (sometimes far cheaper).
One mile of new fiber optic is anywhere from $2000.00 to $5000.00 per mile (depending on who is buying it).
Cable would be cheaper but Insight is SOL outside of city centers, (unlike Charter) because they just don't have the resources to grow as a cable provider.

All my money is on DSL and cable leading the ISP market for the next 50 years.
Then LT and wormports should be fully developed with the non-linear drives and porting everything from independant locations at over 10gps.
