With the death of a student from P.R.P last week I just wonder if the athletic assosiation will look at the guide lines that a coach is suppose to follow. I know that when my youngest son played for Fern Creek the kids were pushed his last year cause they had a good shot at the state title and the coach could taste it. My heart hurts for this mother and her loss, and she will never get over this. As a mother and grandmother i know she will always wonder what he may have become. I would like to see a "Parent Commity" put in place to make sure that our children are not being used as pawns in the race for glory. If this child strictly died from heat then that is unacceptable. Parents, go to these practices and watch your child and don't be afraid to go out on that field if you don't like the way your child looks or if they say they don't feel good. I've heard more then one coach tell a player to SUCK IT UP, be tough! Sports are great til the line is crossed and the coach doesn't know when to stop. I would like to know if the boy had said something to the coach and they just brushed it off and how this coach is going to deal with this for the rest of his life. I pray that this mom can find some comfort and peace and as she shows his picture from time to time she can say she raised a REAL winner.

A coach has to walk a very fine line of not coddling the kids while not breaking them, either. Jason Stinson was a first-year coach but he did have previous experience. The police dept. is investigating to see if there has been criminal wrongdoing. It's said that 4 witnesses have come forth who saw what happened.

My personal read is that this coach likely crossed the line. Two young men went to the hospital with problems. Max Gilpin arrived at Kosair with a 107 degree body temperature. Further, it's said that he was examined before he died for any pre-existing problems. I'm afraid that the coach may have let his machismo get the best of him. Frowner

The young men's machismo may have also been at play. I'm sure none of the guys want to break rank, take a water break, and appear to be a wus. It hard to imagine how anyone would let themselves die from heatstroke from fear of appearing a sissy or letting the team down.

You're right, fridge. The coach has a tight line to walk but football isn't worth dying over. Roll Eyes

French you are right think back to your teens and didn't you think you were invincable? That is why the parents need to be close, we've learned that your whole life can be turned upside down in just a second. But thies kids think that nothing can happen to them that they are in control but what they don't realise is they can't control the actions of others. When you put your child in the hands of another they are not going to watch out for them like you are weather it be a CAREGIVER or a coach and that is a hard thing to say but unfortunitly that is the world we have, So that is why a paret commity is needed. I would trust 8 to 10 parents more then i would the coach and please don't get me wrong there are a lot of great coaches out there. The parents will over see the health of each child but the coach will only see the well being of the team. Something like this makes you look at your kids in a new light and if you haven't told them how much you love them in a while or haven't hugged them or picked up the phone to call them in awhile, you won't be sorry if you do it now!

Coaches' actions in heat death defended

I seems to me as if the school system and the coaches are trying to cover up misdeeds and explain everything away. I just can't buy the idea that not one but two young men were brought down by heat stroke and no wrongdoing occurred.

I hope we'll get a chance to hear from the many witnesses to the practice that day. Something isn't right here. Frowner
