We have a small farm... very small. It is not a working farm, but rather a hobby for us.
I have had more than a few trips to the emergency room but only one where we had to go to Louisville. That was when my husband broke his arm and at that time, they did not have an orthopedic doc on call.
The only time I really mind the drive is when we are out to dinner or something in Louisville with friends and have a 45 minute drive home. Otherwise, we plan our trips accordingly. We don't just run to Walmart. We run to Walmart, the grocery, Lowes, etc.
One comment about folks moving to rural areas. Be mindful of who was there first. I get so tired of city or suburban folks moving to rural areas and then complaining about the smell from the dairy cows, or the farmer who is spraying his field with manure tea. Then you gotta love the fella who compains about the farmer who is logging his woods and destroying their view. That is part of living in a rural area. If you don't like it, don't move there.
MJ, sounds like your husband is well aware of the "extras" that come with rural living. If he can't deal with the smells, you should probably respect his wishes as he would not be happy.

Good point. This is true. We are both aware of the smells and country living. I was country bound most of my life as a kid,but no farm. He worked on a farm as a kid and didn't like it. I just get tired of the city. Maybe we should just get us some land and use it as a getaway. Big Grin

that is certainly an option, MJ... there are places where you can get 5 acres or so (although probably not in Jefferson County) and have some privacy and "countriness" without being rural. That way you have a place to go play but you don't live there. And who knows, if you break him in slowly, your husband may come on around to your heart's desire. Smiler
