Back in August of 2006 there was a law passed that Lice Nits were ok for school.
WHAT!?! HUH!?! Exactly! I was shocked to find out that any student who has Lice Nits is allowed to remain in school. I was told by a teacher. To double check on my way out of the school I asked the front office,it was true. So to further educate myself on the matter I called the Health Department and spoke with L. Martin. She confirmed it was true.
So here it is Oct. 30,2007 and I am just now finding this out!!! Mad

While at my child's school today a student was scratching her head every couple of minutes. Next thing I know she was being called out of class. She came back some time later. Other students were called until everyone had been checked. The stidents wqere asking each other "Do you have lice?" All but one answered no. The little girl didn't answer at all. The teacher corrected them about asking.
So when I asked how come she wasn't being sent home here was my answer:

"August of 2006 a law was passed that we are not allowed to send students home just because they have Lice Nits in their hair." "We can only send them home if they have live Lice crawling about."

I asked how come us parents were not informed of such a change. Her answer:

"The school was supposed to have sent out a letter last year, all JCPS were supposed to."

I contacted Greg Stumbo and many others. I will keep contacting them until someone does something about this.

So far Mr. Stumbo's wife is the only one who has replied to me. This is what she said:

(Mrs. Blank), I am going to forward this to Charlotte Land In Greg's office in Frankfort. They will better be able to address your issues. Best of luck. By the way, we have an almost 8 year old and I understand your positions.

Background checks on School Employees:

I have talked to several teachers about this topic. Every one of them said they only had one background check done and that was at the time they were hired. So let me get this right here,US parents have to have a background check every year just to be able to go on a trip with our child and the school, but School Employees who are with our children 5 days a week where we can't be only have to have one done and that's to see if they can be hired or not???

I also sent out e-mails about this to Greg Stumbo and many others. This is ridiculous. Mad

If you are so unhappy, maybe you should consider placing your child in a different school district.

I am a teacher in this district and trust me.... we are not happy about the lice issue either. I don't want to get it or have other kids in my classroom get it. I agree that it is ridiculous. But unfortunately society gets so worried about the rights of some people, they tend to forget about the rights of others.

As far as the background checks go... I think it is a good idea that parents are checked. I think the reason parents who've been checked before have to be checked again might have something to do with kids transfering to other schools or maybe its easier to check each year. Who knows... I didn't ask for this to happen. But I would think parents would be ok with background checks due to the safety of their kids. Wouldn't you rather schools be overly protective than not enough? Try not to take it so personally... teachers are not out to get you and make your life miserable.
And as far as background checks on teachers go.... that would be fine with me... I have nothing to hide. Just keep in mind... teachers are about the last people this district listens to... parents have more voice than we do, seriously!

I wasn't aware you teachers made enough to help us unhappy parents move to another district. When are you paying for it? Didn't think so.

Well glad you aren't happy about it,but when I have something to say I will say it. I don't need your permission. Don't you have class to teach or is this a case of you wished you were a teacher?

For a teacher you don't read well. I don't have a problem with parents getting background checks every year. I have a problem with school staff NOT having to have one every year. Did I type it out enough this time for you? Of course I am concerned and want my children protected, that is WHY I have a problem with school staff NOT having a background check done every year. Make sense now?

You claim to be a teacher? After seeing your reading comprehension I totally doubt you're a teacher. You do make me laugh though. Thanks. Now it's not personal when I have a reasonable complaint and school staff NOT having background checks every year like parents have to isn't personal,it's a HUGE CONCERN. Got that now?

Seriously,I have already brought my concerns to the table. Now we play the waiting game to see who is actually going to put our children first. This GRIPE of mine was never AT/TO/TOWARDS teachers. You can rest now.
