quote: Originally posted by nell: Has anyone got any thoughts on the schools providing "alternative lunches" to children whose parents either CAN"T or won't pay for their lunches,ad by can't I mean the ones who do not qualify for freereduced lunches even thought there may be bills that eat up a parents paycheck/unemployement and those things are not considered when a parent files an application for free/reduced lunches, those forms only ask for income,NOT expenses.
But the children suffer embarrassment and ridicule from their peers when only allowed a cheese or peanut butter sandwhich for lunch.
It creates a hostile environment for the children who have to endure the humiliation of the situation.
As a parent, one has to put their children first. Don't try to tell me that someone can't go to Aldi's or Save-A-Lot and get some fixings for a brown-bag lunch. Parents who don't provide adequate lunches for their children should be charged with child neglect. Exceptions should be allowed only in extreme cases. Kids can't learn well if they aren't fed well.
