I am happy to see someone is doing something about bullying in schools. It should not happen period. I remember the non-stop tormenting I took in school. It affected my self-esteem, my self-worth, my grades, you name it. It took a terrible toll on my life even now as an adult. I think of the kids that have lost thier life to someone who was bullied and decided to bring a gun to school to stop the torment. How many more kids do we have to lose before someone does something to stop it?
Kim Batts a mother in the story was talking about "... looking at the big picture and not be so focused on the normal name calling" Why is name calling thought of as normal? Why is making fun of people and making them feel bad about themselves or a situation they cant help being in okay? With me I didnt have a lot of clothes which was something I could not control, and was called fat and ugly even though I was neither fat nor ugly . I was the tallest one in my class and was built different than the other girls. Therefore I was singled out and I was absolutely tormented. I wish the Jefferson Co Public School System would have the insight to do the right thing, and follow what Henry County is doing. Words hurt, being called stupid, or ugly has a lasting effect. Dont we owe it to our kids to promote self-esteem and help them to be all thay can be, rather than making them feel less than a human being?

We don't live in a perfect world. It would be nice if we did,but we don't. Maybe that's why some people feel it's not so bad(name calling) verses hitting or stealing. It's not right but it's been going on for years and there's worse things kids can be doing.

If you're going to take that route, I suppose so. They could always be stealing cars and stripping them for parts. I for one thing that bullying cause harm that often doesn't show. We should let our kid grow up with a positive image of themselves.

I was giving an example of why some parents don't see name calling as a big deal(their kids could be doing worse things and I have heard many parents say that). I never said I didn't see it as a big deal. I printed out the story and will discuss it during a school meeting about possibly adopting the same punishment, however it is an Elementary school so it may not be adopted. My oldest will be in Middle school perhaps I could run it by them just to see what they think about it.
