Yes,that was very stupid.

With his age and gender, he could have easily done this woman (or her son) injury or death without use of firearms.

What would have been ideal is for one or both of these two to have stopped at a public place or made a turn and thereby break up this rolling argument that was apparently going on. Stupid things happen when stupid meets stupid.

Right. She could have fled or if trapped called the police. If he was able to bust her window out that phone could have went upside his head,plus the fact her son wasn't willing to just sit there. So whacked with the phone and a kid biting,pinching,poking,kicking,screaming,pulling hair,clawing,..... whew that would have messed him up.
I really don't think that this was a case of self defense.
