Yes she could have but what if he had a gun when he approached them and shot them first? So while that's a nice thought, it's not necessarily the best defense.
First, he apparently didn't have a gun. Otherwise, the police would have reported that. Second, are we all going to develope 'itchy' trigger fingers on the basis that someone might have a gun??? She, herself stated that she had already placed the gun within easy reach. This was daylight with plenty of people around. quote:

Certainly, but by the time the cops got there, it would have been all over with anyway. So again, not the best defense.
Very few people are going to an 'instant' kill. Even if this guy was extremely agitated or deranged, it probably would have taken several minutes for him to shoot a gun. They apparently had no previous aquaintance. QUOTE]The use of a firearm should only be used as a last resort.
