Frowner Help Cindy~! My garden of hostas & roses are being taken over by something that is making holes in my hostas & roses. Did I hear you say on one morning show recently that it could be slugs...and to use vinegar~? Some guy told me to put a small amount of beer in the garden & that will rid them, will it~? Thanks Smiler

The Hosta Society recommends a mixture of one cup white vinegar with three cups water to spray on and around your plants.

If you want to use a synthetic bait, but are concerned about your pets or other creatures, try this method:
Cut the top off of a two-liter bottle at the point where it narrows. Put the bait in the bottom portion of the bottle and then invert the top into the cut end of the container. Dig a shallow trench and bury the bottle sideways about halfway so that the slugs can crawl into the hole. The slugs crawl in and can’t get out, and the bait stays safely in the bottle. When you are tired of looking at dead slugs, simply throw the entire apparatus away.

You can also use other products specifically for slug control:
Diatomaceous earth is simply crushed fossils; a thin band of this product sprinkled around the perimeter of the area that you want to protect with keep the slugs from crossing over.
