We moved in a 40 plus year old house and the yard is more brown than green. It is surrounded by several very large pine and maple trees so sun light does not get through very well. What kinds of grasses should I get to grow in so much  shade. The yard is children free so it will not have to stand up to a lot of traffic.

The best turf grass for shade in Kentuckiana is an improved turf type tall fescue. There are many, many good varieties on the market, you might even want to choose a blend of three different cultivars. These grasses are also drought tolerant and insect and disease resistant. Use a power seeder to plant the seed, fertilize at the same time with a fertilizer formulated for lawns, and keep the area well watered to compete with the tree roots. The other option that you should consider is having your trees trimmed to reduce the canopy and limb them up to allow more light to reach the grass.
