I have Ivy all over a tree.In the spring the tree will grow leaves and then they will wilt away.In another month new growth will come back but these leaves have brown spots on them. The ivy goes up the tree in 8 inch root stems that attach to the tree and is diffucult to remove.Does Ivy choke a tree and cause rot underneath? What should I do if anything? Thanks!!

Ivy

Cindi covered this recently. This is what you'll find relevant to your question.

"Ivy can also cause damage when it starts to grow up a tree. The Ivy will compete with the tree for water, nutrients, and sunlight. Another danger is that the tree’s trunk or branches may have damage that the ivy would hide if it gets thick.

To remove ivy from trees, don’t worry about pulling the ivy out of the tree, just cut the stems off at the ground level and then cut the stem again as high up as you can reach. The idea is to take out a section of the stem that cuts off nutrient and water flow. The Ivy will brown out and die and will eventually decompose."

Hope this helps. Smiler
